Transatlantic collaboration in cardiovascular research and care

DGK-Jahrestagung 2026 | Herzmedizin.de editor-in-chief PD Dr. Stefan Perings invites the president of the American College of Cardiology (ACC), Prof Roxana Mehran, as well as the govenor and govenor elect of the German Cardiac Society's (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Kardiologie - DGK) Chapter of the ACC, Prof Volker Rudolph and Dr Nina Wunderlich, to a discussion on bilateral topics.

In addition to discussing the value of the transatlantic collaboration between the two associations, the ACC and the DGK, and the outlook of initiatives such as the German Chapter of the ACC and its exchange program, the main focus of the talk is a global approach on tackling hypertension.

Take-aways

  • The close transatlantic collaboration between ACC and DGK is highly valuable, as shared challenges in healthcare can be addressed through exchanging perspectives and solutions across systems.
  • Joint symposia focus on clinically relevant topics based on current evidence and guidelines, and benefit especially from differing interpretations rather than strict consensus.
  • Hypertension is the most important modifiable risk factor for ischemic heart disease, and newer guidelines emphasize lower blood pressure targets.
  • Future management of hypertension will likely combine improved adherence strategies, more aggressive treatment approaches, and personalized therapies, including emerging interventional options like renal denervation.

DGK section “German Chapter des ACC”

The aim of the section is to work closely with the American College of Cardiology in promoting research into the heart, the vascular system, and blood circulation, as well as the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases.

Joint scientific symposia are held at the annual meeting of the DGK and at the annual meeting of the American College of Cardiology. In addition to scientific exchange, the chapter also promotes the sharing of clinical patient care experiences between American and German physicians.

To support the development of emerging talent, the Chapter has established a one-year exchange program with a diverse range of opportunities for young cardiologists from the DGK and the ACC.
